About Noosa Film Society PDF Print E-mail

brokenembraces03

The Noosa Film Society was established in 1979 to encourage interest in film as an art form. At first movies were screened at the golf club to a small group of film enthusiasts once a month. Several years later, screenings were moved to the Noosa Arts Centre where they continued to play until the cinema in Noosa Junction was built.
Film Society screenings are scheduled on average twice a month on Wednesdays and are restricted to members only.
Membership renewals take place each year in August/September at which time existing members are invited to re-join.  Vacancies are filled from a waiting list compiled from applications received throughout the year.
The Society works closely with the management team at Noosa Five Cinemas, who also strongly support the art house film genre.  After a film is screened to NFS members, the cinema usually opens the film to the general public on Thursday, when it continues to screen for a week or more. This collaborative effort means that film lovers no longer need to travel to Brisbane to see new release films, but can enjoy them right here in the recently renovated cinema complex.

Membership to Noosa Film Society - Waiting List

Due to the number of people on the current waiting list, there is a delay of approximately two years before being invited to join the Noosa Film Society. Invitations to join are sent out by post, in August each year.
While waiting, we suggest you take advantage of some of the discounts offered by the Noosa Five Cinemas - such as Seniors Card or by joining the Directors Club. If you are keen to see any of our films, the Noosa Five Cinema usually screens our films for the general public for a week after one of our screenings.

Planning to end the corrupt Brezhnev regime in 1981, Sergei, a KGB officer whose code name is Farewell, requires a go-between to leak documents to the West. He chooses an unlikely French engineer, Pierre, who lives in the French Embassy with his wife and children. Reluctantly, Pierre passes the information onto the French Government which hands them directly to the United States.

From this little known true story, the leaks are said to have paved the way to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Director Christian Carion, (Joyeux Noel), has interestingly cast two fellow directors, Emir Kusturica as Sergei and Guillaume Canet as Pierre in the lead roles. There are also cameo parts by Fred Ward as Ronald Reagan with William Dafoe as his top aide and Philippe Magnan as Francois Mitterand.
