Christophe Barratier's delightful French film, Les Choristes (The Chorus) was a 2004 Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film. It is set in 1949, as France is just beginning to pull out of the shadow of World War II.

Clement Mathieu, whose ambition to be a composer hasn't eventuated, accepts a position at a boarding school for extremely troubled boys.   His students are thieves, liars and just plain delinquent.   The school's atmosphere reflects the administration's belief that these boys are hopeless cases.

When Mathieu introduces them to music, teaching them the freedom and joy it brings to the soul, the boys begin a stunning transformation.   The headmaster however does not agree with Mathieu's techniques.   Thus begins a power struggle between the teacher who wishes to bring his pupils joy and the administrator who wishes to punish the children for their crimes.

Taking France by storm and the number one movie at the French box office in 2004, Les Choristes purportedly led to a surge in applications to join choirs all over the country.   The magic is unquestionably in the music, which will bring tears to viewers' eyes.   The story is touching.   The characters are likable.   But the ultimate magic is the choir and boy soprano Jean-Baptiste Maunier chosen from two thousand auditions.
