Volver concerns itself with a female family unit residing in a quaint village on the outskirts of Madrid. The ravishingly beautiful Penelope Cruz plays the often abrupt and feisty Raimunda who is forced to help solve a prickly domestic crisis and, at the same time, make ends meet to support her teenage daughter Paula (an impressively naturalistic Yohana Cobo.) As a result, the no nonsense family matriarch successfully “ditches” her unemployed husband and then takes it upon herself to restore the local restaurant and transform it into a thriving village hub. Meanwhile her uptight and reclusive sister Sole (Lola Duenas) makes contact with the ghost of her departed mother (a radiant Carmen Maura) who then proceeds to move into her daughter’s modest city apartment and relays the somewhat tragic and secretive family history. Hence the main crux of this beguiling drama revolves around the eventual reunion of this splintered family unit and the cathartic airing of “their dirty linen” which unfolds gracefully throughout the film’s duration. Volver qualifies as a must-see movie for the director’s fans or for those who wish to admire one of the greatest living cinema artists. |
