Two seemingly different stories unfold, the first in Bremen where Ali, a Turkish widower hires a Turkish prostitute, Yeter, to become his live-in companion. When Ali’s son, Nejat, meets Yeter they form a friendship and Ali becomes jealous. In the second story we follow Yeter’s daughter Ayten who is a political activist on the run. She escapes to Germany and in Hamburg she befriends Lotte who invites her to stay in her home, much to the reticence of Suzanne, Lotte’s mother. It is only near the end of the movie that the two stories link up. However, throughout we see the similarity between the two; the forming of unusual friendships, the relationships between parent and child and the yearning for their homeland. Director Fatih Akin (Head On) has also written the screenplay which is beautifully structured. Born in Germany of Turkish parents, he has been praised for his insightful portrayal of characters and their emotions. This film has already won the Best Screenplay Award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. |
