JUST TO BE SURE – Wednesday 14 February 2018
Directed by Carine Tardieu
France (2017) (sub-titled)
100 mins Comedy
When 45 year old widower Erwan, an unshakeable mine-clearing agent, discovers by accident that the man who raised him isn't his real dad, he begins a search for his biological father. He soon locates the mischievous, 70 something Joseph, whom his mother knew briefly.
Erwan falls not only for his charm, but that of the impetuous Anna, who has ties to them both. The conflicting familial loyalties soon become compounded by the pregnancy of his own daughter Juliette, who defiantly refuses to name the father.
“In her third feature, director Carine Tardieu and her co-writers build a muted classical comedy of errors that Shakespeare would have recognised”.
Paul Byrnes, Sydney Morning Herald
“The film, in the fine tradition of Sautet's movies, throws up serious questions along the way, the principal one being the role of the father”.
David Stratton, The Australian
“A charming tale of multiple quid pro quos that's as light-hearted as its subject matter is deadly serious”.
Julian Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter
